Reaffirming My Happiness

As a small child, when I used to go to school, I used to fantasize about going to College and used to wonder, how happy that day would be. When I went to college, then I used to wonder, how happy that day would be, when I would be getting a job. When I went for a job, pursuit of happiness continued conditionally – increment, promotion, better job offers, new jobs etc. Seeking happiness led me to leave job and turn into an entrepreneur and then everyday I used to wonder, I might be the happiest when my company’s turnover would touch a crore. Years have gone by and when I sit back today, I do realize that the beauty of life remains untapped and life just passes by.

‘Happiness shall be a way of life’. When life goes through different stages, changes would happen, certain changes would be pleasant, certain changes would not be so pleasant, certain changes would bring loads of happiness whereas certain changes would bring sadness. Basically, happiness is not the absence of sorrows in life, but it is about, how we can carry ourselves even amidst sorrow. The thumb rule is I must be happy from within. When I can be happy from within, I am sure, I can be a source of happiness for others as well.

I do completely resonate with the thought that we must be able to celebrate life every day rather every moment (#CelebrateLife). Festivals and big occasions like a promotion or a wedding or any event are generally a cause for celebration for everyone, but let us pledge to celebrate every day, every moment of living. Let rest everything or every event be a bonus to our happiness.

I want to quote Gautam Buddha here: “How well did you love; how fully did you live and how deeply did you let go?” I loved this quotes, since I feel, this is one of the mantra of happiness and to be able to celebrate every moment.

Happiness is actually an emotional state of well-being. It is the mental framework which we adopt. Today, when I have sat down to write about what happiness mean to me, I feel, every moment of life can bring a lot of happiness to us. It is all about how we perceive our lives. It may not be possible to have the best of everything in life, but are we able to be happy and grateful of what we have in our lives? People often ask me, how one can be happy amidst tough situations. I say, it is not easy, but it becomes definitely easier to be happy by looking at the brighter side of life.

Offlate I watched a movie called “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (my review is at http://moviereviewsbybinduc.blogspot.in/2015/03/quick-review-of-second-best-exotic.html). In this movie, if somebody is in search of a soul-mate, somebody else is search of true love, the lead protagonist wants to achieve a lot through his profession, somebody wants to decide between the two relationship to make a permanent tie with one of them… the list goes on, but the ultimate thing is that everybody is in pursuit of happiness. Aren’t we also like that in real life.

But the tragedy is we don’t know, what would fetch us happiness. Either we are dependent on others to fetch us happiness or we are escaping from the negativities of lives so as to get pseudo-happiness.

I believe that my happiness is definitely dependent on so many factors but the basic fact is (as I wrote earlier), whether I am able to feel the happiness within. Do I look outside for reasons to be happy or do I look within for reasons of happiness ? How can I keep my people, near and dear ones happy, if I can not keep myself happy. I feel, it is very important to feel the happiness from within, then only I can spread happiness in and around. Happiness is one attribute, the more we share, more we get.

What are the sources of my happiness? How I end up celebrating my every moment of life in a day, let me share with you the same (please ignore the order of listing).

Being Alive: Morning when I get up, I get that first breeze of happiness: “Thank God, I am alive and have another day in my hand.” The very thought of being alive gives me tremendous energy.
Image Courtesy: My Mumma, my support system
My Family: Just having meals with family gives me a feeling of satisfaction and happiness. When I come back home after work, I find Mumma waiting for me eagerly to understand how my day had been, gives lot of happiness. When I just sit with her at the end of the day to interact with her and listen to her, It just feels so nice. She is a big critic of mine who keeps me grounded.

When I Skype every night with dearest brother and family, who are in USA, it adds so much to my happiness. I am so much emotionally dependent on my family. Today’s digital media revolution helps me not to feel the distance and interact with brother and family, be it through Skype, Google hangout etc. it just gives me so much emotional security. From India, through digital media, I have seen my lovely nephew and niece growing up. The distance is never felt. I feel so happy. When they visit India, just spending time with them, hang out for movies, Golgappes, Chaat, Jelebis etc. makes me so happy. Thank God, my family is my emotional anchor.

Few of my friends:You all give me so much of happiness. Thank u all.
My Friends: I might not be able to sit physically with my close friends always, but whenever we catch up through any form of media, it gives loads and loads of happiness. Friends are so much part of life, with whom we can cry, laugh, and also not shy away from being emotionally vulnerable. When we get together, we begin from where we stopped. Life gets much more beautiful with them.

Being Healthy: I head for my gym / swimming and the weighing scale shows 0.5 kg less weight, it brings a smile on my face. Wow, my effort to keep fit has worked (this is a typical female thought, isn’t it). I am sure, this brought smile to your face. Oh yes, I understand that, I am far from my goal, but yes, the very thought to keep fit gives me happiness.

Snapshots of Training - I actually end up living my life here...
My Profession: What a wonderful thing to speak about life! As a trainer, when I interact with people, there are lot many happenings which give me immense happiness. I get an opportunity to strike the right chord with strangers. A complete stranger group turns out to be good acquaintance as the session moves further. When I am able to convert the cautious affiliation seen in the eyes of the people into getting to curious mode to know more, learn more, makes me happy. When I am able to give a reason to think to the participants in the programme, that makes me happy. When at the end of the programme, participants share their emotions, I feel happy.

With my Best friend and Business Partner Thomas Mathews during a training session
My Business Partnership: Having a business partner who shares my vision of running an ethical organization also adds to my happiness.

My Interests: Being a movie buff, I wait for a Friday to catch up with the movies. Rather I actually look forward for good movies to release.

My Blog: Blog is one of the best thing which has happened in my life. I have been a blogger of movie reviews since last 15 month (http://moviereviewsbybinduc.blogspot.in Watching a movie and reviewing it, and expressing my viewpoints through my blog and ultimately when I get likes, comments from my friends and networks, it gives me immense happiness.

Blog has given me lot of space to express myself, network with fellow bloggers, could strike chord with so many of them, and got so many good friends, whom I haven’t met in real life but know them so well through their wonderful works. This gives me so much happiness.

Feel absolutely blessed to get the attention of so many people from different walks of life for my blog – actors, singers, filmmakers, writers, friends… My blog changed my world positively and the space where I used to be. Blog has fetched me so much of happiness.

My Sleep: I am able to catch a good sleep as soon as I hit bed, this gives me lot of happiness and energy to look forward to another morning, and also hope to correct my mistakes.

Probably I can go on and on, since this simple word happiness has such a deeper meaning. Still, let me sum up, happiness is not the absence of Sorrow, but happiness is a state of mind, which gives me courage to get over the negative situations in a positive manner.  I can just look up to God and thank Him for giving me such a blissful life. Thank you God!!!
I just want to bring lot of smiles to all of you my dear ones through this post. Did I make you happy???

The Steel-Willed Arunima Sinha

Every individual is a story himself / herself. It is important to introspect regarding what story we tell ourselves and also what story we want to tell the world. This is what came to my mind, when I opened the link www.willofsteel.in. I went through all the stories featured here. Every story is unique in itself. Every individual featured deserves to be on this page. If some have selflessly served others, some others have become a great source of inspiration to others by being a role model. Some have achieved ‘the impossible’ in their lives through their consistent efforts; others have strong determinations to fulfill their visions. It was difficult to pick up one story, which inspired me most since, I got goose bumps while going through most of them.

Still, if you ask me to pick up one story, which inspired me most, then it is of Arunima Sinha. She is an epitome of strength, courage, free will, independent thinking and determination, rather in one phrase, Arunima has will of steel. While I was trying to understand her story, I remembered the dialogue from a Malayalam Movie (year 2014): Make the lowest point of your life as the starting point of a new chapter. You will be amazed to understand the steel-willed Arunima’s story.

Little did Arunima Sinha (Born 1988) know when she boarded the train on 11th April, 2011 from Lucknow, that it would change her life for ever. She was a national volleyball and football player at that time and she was going to take an examination to join the CISF. She was pushed out of the general coach of the train by thieves wanting to snatch her bag and gold chain. going It was year 2011, when Arunima was travelling by a train and a few thieves. In her own words "I resisted and they pushed me out of the train. I could not move. I remember seeing a train coming towards me. I tried getting up, but by then, the train had run over my leg. I do not remember anything after that. "The train crushed her leg below the knee. She was rushed to hospital with serious leg and pelvic injuries. Doctors had to amputate her leg below the knee to save her life. A rod had to be inserted inside her leg to provide support to the damaged limb.

Arunima says it was her "darkest hour". She says "I was shattered. Here was someone who was totally independent, and now I was dependent on others for support. Visitors who came to see me at the hospital showed sympathy. But then I decided to do something that would inspire others." She also says her family's support gave her immense confidence.

She was later provided with a prosthetic leg free of cost by a private Delhi-based Indian Company.

She says: "I decided to challenge myself with the toughest sport. And I chased my dream with passion."

Equipped with a prosthetic leg and an iron will, she decided to challenge herself with the toughest sport. She contacted Bachendri Pal (The first Indian woman to scale Mount Everest in 1984), as soon as she got the discharge from the hospital. Arunima underwent rigorous training under her for climbing the mountains.

Arunima says "I felt low when I could not catch up with other 'normal' able-bodied people. But I was determined to outpace them. And I did," she says.

It took her 52 days of torturous climbing on the snowy peaks to conquer Mount Everest (on 21st May, 2013). She turned her artificial leg into her strength. She had achieved what was unthinkable to many. She says: "When I reached the summit, I felt like screaming at the top of my voice. I wanted to tell the world, here I am. I have saved that moment within me." She further adds: "Actually my screaming did not last long. You see, I did not have much energy left. Had I been a painter, I would have tried to capture that image on a canvas. "

While descending also, she faced lot of challenges. But she like a steel-willed woman, thrived under all odd circumstances and emerged victorious and became the first amputee to climb Mount Everest.

Arunima has dedicated her achievement "to those who lose hope".

Later Arunima went to be the first female amputee to climb Mt. Kilamanjaro in Africa and Mt. Elbrus in Eurpoe. She is now busy with plans to open a sports academy for the poor and physically challenged children. She says: "I want to train these children so that they achieve their dream. This is my dream too," she says.

Arunima has also written a book "Born again on the mountain". She was even awarded with Padma Shri this year (2015), the fourth highest civilian award of India.

Arunima had a choice to be a victim of circumstances, but she rose to defy all odds. Steel-willed Arunima's story is an epitome of strength, who just turned her darkest hour experiences into the most brightest ones.

Arunima's story inspired me very much and so I chose to vole for her on http://willofsteel.in

I would like to sum up Arunima's story by a quotation: Experience is not what happens to you, but it is what you do with what happens to you.

“I’m voting for Arunima Sinha’s #WillOfSteel and blogging on BlogAdda to help her get felicitated and eventually enabled by JSW”. I invite you all too to vote for her.

Review of Margarita with a Straw

Cast: Kalki Koechlin (Laila), Revathi, Sayani Gupta, Kuljeet Singh, Hussain Dalal, Malhar Khushu, Jacob Berger, Tenzin Dalha, Shuchi Dwivedi
Directed by: Shonali Bose
Produced by: Shonali Bose, Nilesh Maniyar
Written by: Shonali Bose
Music: Mickey McCleary
Cinematography: Anne Misawa
Edited by: Monisha R Baldawa
Production Company: Viacom 18 Motion Pictures
Release Date: 8th September, 2014 (TIFF), 17th April, 2015
Duration: 1 hour 40 minutes
Language: Hindi, English

Margarita with a Straw, a film by Shonali Bose, explores the life of a Delhi University girl suffering from Cerebral Palsy. This is a motor disorder, which restricts the movement of the person, but does not affect the intellect at all. In our country, unfortunately, every specially-abled individual is either looked at as a result of a curse or an object of pity. This film tells us that every individual is God's own creation and unique in their own manner and beyond any judgment. Shonali brilliantly puts across the story of Laila, a very sharp, talented, intelligent person and a music lover too. Very touchy topics viz. her growing physical and emotional needs, desires, her exploration to ascertain her own sexual preferences, her taking pleasure by visiting porn sites, her lesbian relationship, her being bisexual as well, her infatuations etc. are depicted with great dignity and sensitivity. Simultaneously, Shonali wins the audience' hearts with her portraying a wonderful mother-daughter relationship through her story; a family not discriminating between their two children etc. But, what supersedes is the journey of a girl to become self-reliant who gets absolutely comfortable with her own self, falls in love with self, seeks inner happiness by going on a date with self.

Laila (Kalki Koechlin) is brilliant and convincing as a patient of Cerebral Palsy. Initially one struggles to understand her speech but as the frames move further, it becomes easier to understand her speech. How realistic, this is how, it happens in real life as well. She is a Delhi University student who dares to explore her sexual desire with another classmate (a specially-abled boy). She gets infatuated with Nima, a college band singer, and writes lyrics for the band but gets heartbroken when her love is not reciprocated by Nima. Laila wants to escape from the college environment, and to her respite, she gets a scholarship to study in New York University.

Shubhangi (Revathi), a very caring and protective mother of Laila accompanies her to USA for making her settled there. Laila falls in love with an young activist. What happens thereafter, how Laila explores her life further, how she evolves into a self-reliant individual, how she fights with the odds / struggles of her life etc. forms rest of the story. Brutally honest Laila surprises you.

Revathi is brilliant. Wonderful aspects of mother-daughter relationship are shown. Moments worth mentioning: Laila shares with Shubhangi regarding her first love, her heartbreak, her demand of privacy, expression of her sexual preferences, Laila leaning on the shoulder of Shubhangi while the later sings a classical song etc.

Sayani has also justified her character so nicely.

Laila is projected like any other normal individual who has different shades to her character - at times selfless, at times selfish, at times manipulative, at times sensitive, at times a rebel.

Margarita with a Straw peeks into the complex inner world of Laila without a tinge of guilt, or getting preachy or becoming judgmental. It does not even regret her being confined to a wheel chair, rather projects her physical challenges with lot of hope and brightness. A story which is very sensitively handled and focuses on any individual's personal choice, freedom to live his / her life irrespective of the odds.

Margarita with a Straw is the transformational journey of Laila to be a self-reliant individual. It will definitely prompt you to go on a date with your self and sit back to enjoy Margarita.

Review of Mr. X

Cast: Emraan Hashmi (Raghuram Rathid), Amyra Dastur (Sia), Arunoday Singh
Directed by: Vikram Bhatt
Produced by: Mukesh Bhatt, Mahesh Bhatt
Written by: Shagufta Rafique
Music by: Jeet Ganguli, Ankit Tiwari, Ankur Tiwari, Raju Singh (Background Score)
Cinematography: Pravin Bhatt, Chandan Gupta
Edited by: Kuldeep Mehan
Production Company: Vishesh Films
Distributed by: Fox Star Studios
Release Date: April 17, 2015
Language: Hindi

Mr. X, a film churned out by Bhatt Camp, fails miserably. Initial frames appeared as if the movie might build up an interesting plot of ATD's (Anti Terrorist Department) efforts to save the Chief Minister's life but later turns out to be a mere flick of illogically knit sub-plots of vicious conspiracy, saviours turning out to be murderers, treachery, betrayal, power-hungry dirty games, flashes of romance (though it is hardly romantic), and the main plot of journey of Raghuram Rathod to be the invisible Mr. X. Irony is, Mr. Invisible is hardly invisible, dominates the screen space most of the time.

Raghuram Rathod (Imraan Hashmi) and his girl friend Sia (Amyra Dastur), are part of ATD. Raghu dares to risk his life to save a group of people kept as hostage by a terrorist group. Sia, reluctantly allows Raghu to risk his life (since she is in love with him). There are moments of passion dispassionately expressed between the two, even when Raghu proposes to her and commits to enter into marital relationship. Before their dream could turn into reality, Raghu is provided with an opportunity to save Chief Minister, whose life is under threat from a terrorist group. But that opportunity turns out to be a trap for Raghu. He finds himself in a big problem, where he is not given a choice but asked to do something which he doesn't approve of. Corny sub-plots and events lead Raghu to become invisible Mr. X who can be viewed in UV light / Sunlight/ Neon light. And there starts the journey of Mr. X taking revenge with those who made his life hell, played with his dreams, and destroyed his very existence itself.

Script and screenplay do not build up at all. Sia who claims that Raghu is her only emotional anchor believes at the spur of the moment that he is wrong and starts hating him. And later when she encounters the invisible Mr. X, she infers him to be Raghu just with a simple touch with the invisible. She is able to relate with the Bheeni Bheeni Khushbhu of Raghu and declares to ADP and others that Mr. X is none other than Raghu. It is ironic that Mr. X' body retains the original fragrance even after the accident or chemical treatment of his body. Sia is not surprised / shocked to learn regarding Raghu being alive. She does not even try to understand what he went through, but still knows very well that when and how he can become visible. Sia is shown to be a die-hard honest officer, but neither her heart functions nor her mind. She responded to him with great acrimony most of the time. And Raghu realizes that his transformation to Mr. X is not for his love but to initiate his revenge saga.

Mr. X is shown in his torn jacket all the time. The logic??? The invisible person doesn't need to take bath, doesn't need to change clothes, but definitely does need love. Even when the whole refinery has caught fire, a telephone line is intact. Raghu who survives this fire is still strong enough to make a call. Neither his appearance change nor his jacket. Ah... The height of idiocy...

Arunoday as ATD chief is not at all able to pull off his character. Tanmay Bhatt (Polo), a hacker, is just a filler in the plot.

What was the intent of the makers through Mr. X - to tell a love story or a story of revenge saga or a sci-fi thriller ...the film fails in all of them. One can neither fall in love nor empathize with the characters.

Bhatt Camp takes the audience for granted and messes up completely with Mr. X. My rating of 1 out of 5 goes due to the song 'Tu Jo nahin...'

Rating: 1/5 (Poor)
